The LEAP Fund was set up by James Wasdell in partnership with The London Community Foundation, to ensure that young people get the education and skills they need to thrive. Since 2017, the Fund has supported LEAP Science and Maths Schools in South Africa, with the view to also linking up with twin projects in London in the long term.
LEAP Science & Maths Schools provide access to quality education to high school learners residing in six of South Africa’s poorest townships. Established in 2004, the organisation currently benefits 1347 learners through a range of academic and social interventions to address educational deficits still prevalent as a result of a historical unequal education system.
Their 14-year track record of success has proven that every child, irrespective of their socio-economic background has the potential to succeed, given the right opportunities and care. LEAP schools benefit learners who might otherwise have dropped out of school, ensuring they graduate from high school and qualify to register for college diploma or university degree.
An investment of £1,793 covers the total cost of a learner for a full academic year – enabling a pipeline of young talent into critical careers in science, maths, accounting and technology.
